You can walk into this class, knowing nothing about honeybees, and walk out prepared and excited about your new adventure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eYour class will be taught by experienced beekeepers\u003c\/strong\u003e so you know you are getting great information, taught in a way that isn’t intimidating. Regardless of your age, whether you are male or female, or your beekeeping goals, we do our best to teach a reasonable approach to beekeeping that works best for you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe class is lecture-based and interactive, so you will get a chance to open a real hive, weather permitting.\u003c\/strong\u003e We do not open hives during periods of rain, impending poor weather, or when temperatures are below 60°. Just message us some dates and times that work great for you. Each of these classes is designed for around 30 people, as that gives everyone the best opportunity to see and ask questions. We can accommodate groups of 20 or more; we charge only $5 per person for groups of 30 or more to cover any extra costs.  We will invoice this after the class. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur class is 60-75 minutes and is designed to talk all about how bees and beekeepers work through an interactive class where you can see a real colony of bees in our observation hive. You can see, touch, smell, and taste the different products that bees make.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe use a lot of different teaching aids to make it an informative, but also hands-on class. We use wax blocks, honeycomb, frames, pollen, and much more to help. There is one task that every beekeeper does regardless of experience and number of hives, and that is a hive inspection. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring our  1.5-hour Hive Inspection 101 class, we will walk through a colony of bees and teach you how to open the hive properly, light a \u003ca rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxhoundbeecompany.com\/collections\/smokers-and-supplies\" target=\"_blank\"\u003esmoker\u003c\/a\u003e, handle the frames, and identify the brood with confidence. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur class will take place in our on-site bee yard at Foxhound Bee Company. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the class that all beekeepers should take because it isn't a skill that is worth struggling through. At its most basic level, splitting a colony means turning one colony into two.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring our class, you will learn about how splitting a colony works. You will be able to come into our bee yard, where we will open our hives and demonstrate how to make a split. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a very common practice for beekeepers and bees. When beekeepers do this, it is called splitting. When bees do this, it is called swarming. When a colony of bees swarms, it can be heartbreaking for the beekeeper, as they will often lose the swarm. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSplitting the hive before the swarm is a great way to make the most of a strong colony of bees and is relatively easy to do. In our 2-hour class, you will learn about the common ways to split a colony and which way could work best for you. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter finishing this class, you'll understand why you may want to split your colony and what you'll need to do this successfully. Splitting colonies is a great way to keep your apiary healthy and also a great way to help your hobby turn a profit. Wax moths, varroa mites, and beetles oh my! Some of these pests are worse than others but it's important to know about all of them. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is an interactive 2 1\/2 hour class where we will talk about these pests and share the tips and tricks to deal with them. During these classes, you will be able to venture out to our on-site hives and open them up. Fortunately (and unfortunately), we will look through our active colonies and identify small hive beetles and varroa mites and talk through the steps for dealing with them. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou will leave being able to identify the signs of the common pests in a beehive and be equipped with how to deal with them.
